How Do You Check Whether AI Is Recommending Your Business? A Free 10-Minute AI Visibility Check

Aden Wallis

8 Minutes

You can run an AI visibility check yourself today, for free, in about ten minutes. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, ask the exact questions your customers ask, and leave your own business name out of it. Then write down whether you get named. That is the whole test. Below is the manual version, the one you can run yourself in ten minutes. It is genuinely useful, so start there. The full check we run at Escape Web Development goes well beyond it, and further down you will see exactly where the by-hand version runs out of road.

What is an AI visibility check, and why does it matter in Cave Creek?

An AI visibility check is a short test. It shows whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews name your business when someone asks for a recommendation. It is not a ranking report. Instead, it is a record of who the AI hands back as the answer.

This matters more every month. BrightLocal surveyed 1,002 US consumers for its 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey. The share using AI tools to find a local business jumped from 6% to 45% in a single year. Meanwhile, an ALM Corp analysis found Google AI Overviews now appear on up to 68% of local search queries, often sitting above the map pack.

So a homeowner off Cave Creek Road no longer scrolls ten blue links. She asks for a recommendation and gets three names. If yours is not one of them, nothing tells you. There is no ranking drop, no alert, and no line in any report you currently run. That silence is exactly why the check is worth doing.

How do you run a free AI visibility check in 10 minutes?

Here is the full method. Run this AI visibility check start to finish and you will know more about your AI presence than most of your competitors know about theirs.

Step 1: Write down five questions your customers actually ask

Use plain customer language, not industry language. A homeowner does not type "residential HVAC service provider." She types something closer to this:

  • Who is the best HVAC company in Cave Creek, AZ?

  • Who should I call for a slab leak in Cave Creek?

  • How much does it cost to replace a roof in Cave Creek, Arizona?

  • I need an emergency electrician near Carefree tonight. Who is reliable?

  • Which contractors near Cave Creek have the best reviews?

Notice the mix. Two ask for a recommendation, one asks about cost, and one describes a problem instead of a company. Cost and problem questions matter, because those are the ones AI answers most aggressively. Whitespark data showed that a hybrid query like "average cost of dental implants in Phoenix" triggered an AI Overview 97% of the time.

Step 2: Open a fresh, logged-out session

Start a brand new chat in each tool. Better yet, log out or use a private window. Otherwise the assistant remembers you, reads your history, and cheerfully tells you what you want to hear. A fresh session gives you the answer a stranger sees.

Step 3: Ask each question without naming your business

This is the rule people break, and it ruins the whole test. If you ask "tell me about Smith Plumbing in Cave Creek," the AI will describe Smith Plumbing. You learned nothing. You need the stranger's question, so ask for the category and let the AI choose. Being described accurately when you are named is a low bar. Getting named unprompted is the real one.

Step 4: Run every question through every engine

Ask all five questions in ChatGPT. Then repeat in Gemini, in Perplexity, and in Microsoft Copilot. Finally, type the same questions into Google and read the AI Overview at the top. The engines genuinely disagree with each other, so checking only one will mislead you. Cited Co scan data from July 2026 found Phoenix metro businesses that were frequently cited on ChatGPT and completely absent on Perplexity.

Step 5: Record mentions and citations separately

Two different things can happen, and they fail independently:

  • A mention means the AI named your business in its answer.

  • A citation means the AI used your website as a source, usually shown as a small link.

Keep them in separate columns. Semrush analyzed 126 million prompts and found that 62% of AI citations never produce a brand mention. In other words, the model reads your site, borrows your facts, and then recommends somebody else.

What do your AI visibility check results actually mean?

Once you have your grid filled in, your AI visibility check will land in one of three buckets. Each one points at a different problem.

You were named in the answer

Good. Now check the details. Are your services right? Is the location right? Are you confused with a similarly named company? Errors that repeat across several assistants usually trace back to one bad source, so it is worth hunting down. Perplexity lists its sources openly, and ChatGPT and Gemini will usually show theirs if you ask.

You were cited but not mentioned

Your website is readable, which is genuinely good news. However, something is missing. Usually no page states plainly what the business is, where it works, and who it serves. Models need that in one clean sentence they can lift. Clear answer engine optimization structure fixes this faster than almost anything else.

You were nowhere in any AI answer

You are in the majority, so do not panic. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index analyzed roughly 350,000 locations across 2,751 brands. ChatGPT recommended just 1.2% of them. Gemini named 11% and Perplexity 7.4%, while the same brands showed up in Google's local 3-pack 35.9% of the time. SOCi estimated that AI visibility is three to thirty times harder to earn than a strong traditional local ranking.

Why do most Cave Creek businesses fail the AI visibility check?

When a business fails an AI visibility check, the cause is rarely quality of work. Instead, it is usually one of four things.

First, the website does not answer questions. It sells. Pages built entirely of slogans give a model nothing to quote. Second, the site is hard for crawlers to read, which is where technical SEO and schema markup earn their keep. Third, the off-site picture is thin or inconsistent. AI systems lean heavily on Google Business Profile, Yelp, Angi, Nextdoor and the BBB. Mismatched hours or addresses across those profiles create doubt. Building that consistent footprint is ordinary off-page SEO work.

Fourth, and most often, nobody has ever checked. You cannot fix a gap you have not measured.

What are the limits of a manual AI visibility check?

Now the honest part, because a manual AI visibility check has real ceilings and most articles will not tell you that.

Coverage. Five questions across five engines is 25 lookups. That is already a solid ten minutes of clicking. A genuine picture of one trade in one town runs to dozens of question variations across every engine, repeated over time.

Volatility. The same prompt can return different businesses in different sessions. So one run is a snapshot, not a measurement. Trends only appear when you check the same prompts on the same schedule.

Prompt selection. This is the hard one. You are guessing at which questions your customers actually ask an AI. Nobody publishes AI prompt volume the way keyword tools publish search volume. Guessing wrong means you measured the wrong thing very carefully.

All three limits are why we built a free AI visibility report. It runs the full prompt set for your category across eight engines, including Claude, Meta AI and Google AI Mode. A typical report tests 240 AI answers rather than the handful you can manage by hand. You see the result prompt by prompt, so you know exactly which questions name you and which ones name a competitor. It also ranks you against every brand cited for your keywords and scores your share of voice. Because we rerun it, you get a trend instead of a single snapshot. Run the manual check first anyway. It only costs you ten minutes, and seeing the result yourself lands harder than reading it in a report.

What should you do after your AI visibility check?

Whatever your AI visibility check turned up, the next moves are the same, and they are ordinary work rather than magic.

  1. Write one plain definitional sentence about your business and put it high on your home page.

  2. Turn your service pages into answers. Use real customer questions as headings, then answer in the first sentence or two.

  3. Add schema markup so engines can parse who you are and what you do.

  4. Tidy your Google Business Profile and make your name, address and hours identical everywhere.

  5. Ask for detailed reviews. A review naming the service and the city teaches an AI more than a five-star rating with no words.

  6. Re-run the check monthly and keep a screenshot of every win.

That last one matters more than it sounds. Most businesses have no baseline, so they cannot tell progress from noise. We keep a dated log for every client, and it is the first thing we open on a review call. If you would rather hand the whole cycle to someone, that is the job of an AEO agency. It is exactly what we do for businesses around Cave Creek and the north Valley.

Frequently asked questions about checking AI visibility

These are the questions Cave Creek owners ask us most often once they have run their first AI visibility check.

Can I just ask ChatGPT if it knows my business?

You can, but it teaches you very little. Naming your own business almost guarantees a friendly description. The useful test is the category question, asked as a stranger, with your name left out entirely.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead of me?

Usually because it can confirm more about them than about you. Reviews, directory listings, consistent details and clear on-site answers all build that confidence. A model recommends the business it can read without guessing.

How often should I check my AI visibility?

Monthly is plenty for most local businesses. Keep the prompt list identical every time, because a changing list gives you numbers you cannot compare. Then log the results with the date.

Does ranking on Google mean AI will recommend me?

Not reliably. SOCi found that strong traditional local performance did not carry over to AI recommendations. In retail, fewer than half of the brands winning in local search appeared in AI answers. It helps for Google's own AI Overviews, which draw most citations from the organic top 10. Beyond that, it is a separate game with separate scoring. A good SEO company in Cave Creek should be tracking both.

Is there a free AI visibility checker?

Plenty of tools offer a quick score, and the manual method above costs nothing at all. Ours is free too, and it exists because the manual version cannot solve prompt selection. Use whichever gets you a baseline this week.
